Candle Care 101: Make Your Luxury Candles Last Longer

Candle care guide — how to make your Bougie Hermit luxury candles last longer

Expert tips to maximise burn time, prevent tunnelling, and get the most from your premium candles

Why Candle Care Matters

You have invested in luxury candles from Bougie Hermit because you value quality, craftsmanship, and beautiful fragrance. But even the finest hand-poured candles need proper care to perform at their best.

With the right techniques, you can double your candle's burn time, prevent common issues like tunnelling and sooting, and ensure every burn is as perfect as the first. Whether you are burning our woody fragrances, floral scents, or seasonal favourites, these care tips apply to all our candles.

The Golden Rules of Candle Care

1. Trim Your Wick to 5mm Before Every Burn

This is the single most important candle care habit. A properly trimmed wick ensures:

  • Clean, even burning without smoke or soot
  • Longer burn time (untrimmed wicks burn faster)
  • Steady, beautiful flame
  • No black carbon buildup on the glass

How to do it: Use a wick trimmer to cut the wick to exactly 5mm before lighting. Remove the trimmed portion and discard it. Never leave wick trimmings in the wax.

Pro tip: Trim your wick when the wax is solid and cool, not immediately after extinguishing.

2. Allow a Full Melt Pool on the First Burn

The first burn is crucial. Candles have wax memory. If you do not let the wax melt completely to the edges on the first burn, your candle will tunnel every time after.

How long to burn:

  • Small candles (100 to 150g): 1 to 2 hours
  • Medium candles (200 to 250g): 2 to 3 hours
  • Large candles (300g and above): 3 to 4 hours

The rule: Burn your candle for 1 hour per inch of diameter. Our luxury candles are designed to create a full melt pool, but they need time to do it properly.

3. Never Burn for More Than 4 Hours at a Time

Long burns can cause:

  • Overheating and cracked glass
  • Mushrooming wicks (carbon buildup)
  • Reduced fragrance throw
  • Safety hazards

Best practice: Burn for 2 to 4 hours, then extinguish, let cool completely, trim the wick, and relight if desired.

4. Keep Your Candle Away from Drafts

Drafts from windows, fans, or air vents cause:

  • Uneven burning and tunnelling
  • Flickering flames that produce soot
  • Shortened burn time
  • Reduced fragrance throw

Where to place candles: Choose stable, draft-free surfaces away from windows, doors, and vents. This applies to all our products including candles, reed diffusers, and aroma melt warmers.

5. Extinguish Properly — Never Blow Out

Blowing out candles creates smoke, disturbs the wax, and can cause hot wax to splatter.

Better methods:

  • Use a candle extinguisher for smoke-free extinguishing.
  • Use a wick dipper by dipping the wick into the melted wax, then straightening it back up. This prevents smoke entirely.
  • Use a candle lid if your candle came with one. Place it on top to suffocate the flame.

Special Care for Wooden Wicks

All Bougie Hermit candles feature wooden wicks for that distinctive crackling sound. They require slightly different care.

  • Trim to 3mm instead of 5mm.
  • Remove charred bits before each burn by gently breaking them off.
  • Be patient on first light. Wooden wicks may need 20 to 30 seconds to catch properly.
  • Keep the wick centred. Gently straighten if it leans to one side.

Troubleshooting Common Candle Problems

Problem: Tunnelling (wax only melts in the centre)

Cause: Not burning long enough to create a full melt pool.

Fix: Burn for longer periods (2 to 4 hours) until wax melts to the edges.

Prevention: Always allow a full melt pool on the first burn.

Problem: Black Smoke or Soot

Cause: Wick too long, drafts, or burning too long.

Fix: Extinguish, let cool, trim wick to 5mm, move away from drafts.

Prevention: Use a wick trimmer before every burn.

Problem: Weak Fragrance Throw

Cause: Room too large, not enough burn time, or candle placed in the wrong location.

Fix: Move to a smaller room, burn for the full 2 to 4 hours, or layer with a room mist.

Prevention: Choose a candle size appropriate for the room.

Problem: Candle Will Not Stay Lit

Cause: Wick drowning in wax pool, wick too short, or draft.

Fix: Pour off some melted wax when cool, trim wick, eliminate drafts.

Prevention: Do not trim the wick too short. Maintain a 5mm length.

Essential Candle Care Tools

Invest in these candle care accessories to make maintenance effortless.

These tools are not just functional. They are beautiful additions to your candle ritual that show you care about the details.

Storage and Seasonal Rotation

When not in use:

  • Store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep lids on to prevent dust accumulation and preserve fragrance.
  • Rotate seasonal scents and store Christmas candles after the holidays.

Shelf life: Our luxury candles maintain their fragrance for 1 to 2 years when stored properly.

Sustainable Candle Practices

At Bougie Hermit, we are committed to sustainability. Here is how to extend that commitment.

  • Repurpose jars. Clean out finished candles and use as planters, storage, or pen holders.
  • Recycle properly. Glass jars are recyclable once wax is removed.
  • Use every bit. Stop burning when 1cm of wax remains for safety, then scoop out remaining wax for use in an aroma melt warmer.

Every purchase supports our charity partnership with HomeStart Greenwich, so your candle care extends our positive impact.

Beyond Candles: Complete Home Fragrance Care

While you are mastering candle care, do not forget your other fragrance products.

  • Reed Diffusers: Flip reeds weekly and replace reeds every 2 to 3 months.
  • Aroma Melts: Clean your warmer between scents and replace melts when the fragrance fades.
  • Room Mists: Shake before use, store away from heat, and use within 12 months of opening.
